What’s Going On?
From May 9, 2023, Starbucks is implementing an additional $1 charge for customers ordering a Refreshers beverage without water. The additional charge is to cover the cost of the extra ingredients needed to fill the cup when water is not included. On the brighter side, customizations like no ice or light ice won’t attract additional costs.
What’s the Context?
Refreshers, especially in spring and summer, are popular among Starbucks customers. These caffeinated, fruity beverages sometimes contain milk or lemonade, and some patrons prefer to order theirs without water for an intensified flavour.
With this no-water customization becoming increasingly popular, Starbucks has observed that more juice base is required to compensate for the absence of water in the drinks. Therefore, they’ve decided to charge customers for these additional ingredients.
A misunderstanding has been circulating on social media regarding the new fee. Some believed the charge would apply to drinks ordered with light or no ice, but this must be corrected. As USA Today recently reported, a Starbucks representative clarified, “Starbucks Refreshers Beverages can still be customized with light or no ice free of charge.”
What Does This Mean for Customers?
If you’re considering ordering a Refreshers drink at Starbucks, keep this new policy in mind. If you opt for a waterless glass, you will be charged an extra $1, which could make your favourite beverage a little pricier. Regularly opting for this customization could impact your budget.
Consider options that won’t hit your wallet if you’re looking for cost-free customizations. For instance, asking for light or no ice could help maintain the drink’s robust flavour. You can also add extra freeze-dried fruit to your glass without additional cost.
For those loyal to Starbucks, the Starbucks Rewards program is a great way to earn and redeem rewards for free drinks. Despite recent changes making some tips more expensive to save, they can still benefit frequent patrons. Earning a few complimentary beverages yearly is a nice bonus for your budget.
