OpenAI has rolled out its popular chat app’s eagerly awaited Android version, closely mirroring the iOS version released earlier in May.

Today, Android users needing an AI-assisted touch can avail themselves of the official ChatGPT app on their smartphones and tablets. OpenAI declared last Friday that the ChatGPT app would be introduced for Android during the week. Now, as promised, the application is available for download in the Google Play Store, with free usage consistent with the iOS version.

OpenAI made a public announcement via Twitter, marking the successful launch of the Android app, and disclosed that it’s ready for download in the U.S., India, Bangladesh, and Brazil. The company also revealed plans for further expansion into other countries within the following week.

With this new launch, ChatGPT becomes reachable via their website on iPhones, iPads, and Android devices, delivering a similarly engaging experience across all these platforms. The Android app, however, does add a few extra features, aligning with its iOS counterpart.

The app allows you to input your query, followed by additional questions for a more in-depth exploration of the subject. Alternatively, you can initiate a new chat with the ‘+’ icon.

The option to verbally state your queries is also available. Tap the microphone symbol in the Message field, dictate your question or request, and press the circle to finish. Your spoken words will then be transcribed into text, ready for submission.

The app records all your chats across the website and your mobile devices. To revisit any prior discussion, tap the hamburger icon and select ‘History’. This lets you peruse your past conversations or search for a specific one using keywords. You can view any chat by tapping on it.

While viewing a chat, tapping the three-dot icon offers the option to delete or rename the conversation.

Like the website and iOS version, the Android app caters to free ChatGPT users and those holding a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription. Subscribers can switch between GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 modes by tapping at the top of the screen. GPT-4 offers several enhancements, including superior training, extended memory, and enhanced multi-language expertise.

From the Android app’s hamburger icon, you can enter the ‘Settings’ menu, where options to export your chat data into a readable HTML file, erase your chat history, or even delete your account are available. The ‘Settings’ also allow you to modify the colour theme, adjust the default language, and access help information.

AI’s popularity has spurred a wave of third-party apps for iOS and Android, the majority powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT model. Although many operate on a freemium basis, offering a restricted number of chats for free before requiring a paid subscription, OpenAI’s official mobile apps remain free, permitting limitless chatting without any extra expense.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of AI applications, OpenAI remains a frontrunner, consistently offering products that fuse accessibility and innovation. Launching the official ChatGPT app for Android is another step in democratizing AI technology, making it a daily reality for an ever-expanding global audience. This ad-free app, offering unrestricted usage, is a testament to OpenAI’s commitment to facilitating seamless and engaging human-AI interactions.
