As artificial intelligence (AI) began making waves in Nigeria’s music scene, Eclipse Nkasi initially feared that his role as a producer might become obsolete.

However, upon reflection, he realized AI’s potential benefits to his craft. Embracing this technology, Nkasi pioneered an entirely new Afrobeats album in his studio outside Lagos.

“AI isn’t here to sideline our talents. It offers a fresh perspective… I truly believe AI is about to redefine music,” commented Nkasi.

Before this innovation, Nkasi would spend thousands of dollars and months of effort: writing tracks, assembling musicians, recording, and finalizing them in a conventional studio before releasing them to the public.

With AI, the entire process was reduced to a mere three days and a budget of $500.

Teaming up with three colleagues, they activated OpenAI’s ChatGPT software to assist in crafting their nine-track album titled “Infinite Echoes”. The AI helped generate song lyrics and titles, such as “God Whispers,” “Love Tempo,” and “Dream Chaser”. The team then personalized the AI-generated content to align with their overarching theme: the resilience of an artist undeterred by challenges.

Subsequently, they employed a different AI software to curate melodies. Nkasi then recorded vocals processed by an AI application, giving birth to the digital voice of the album’s virtual singer, Mya Blue. This digital songstress is represented to her online fanbase as a computer-animated figure.

Nkasi acknowledges, “Certain aspects of music may be outdated due to AI.” Yet, he emphasizes the new doors AI will open for artists, enabling them to reimagine their craft and streamline their processes.

The transformation brought about by AI is evident in the music world and has the potential to uplift the quality and efficiency of music production significantly, opined Omotolani Alake, a respected music critic based in Lagos.

However, Alake cautions that the journey is just starting. There remain numerous questions and challenges to tackle, such as copyright issues. “This is only the beginning,” he stated.

As AI continues to embed itself in various industries, the Nigerian music scene is a testament to its potential. The harmonious blend of creativity and technology, as showcased by producers like Eclipse Nkasi, heralds a new era for music globally. As we navigate the complexities and challenges it introduces, it’s clear that embracing AI could be the key to unlocking new levels of innovation and efficiency in the world of music.
