In the lead-up to the 2024 Paris Olympics, Team USA’s breakdancers are on a mission that goes beyond medals and glory. They’re determined to preserve the roots and original style of hip-hop dance, even as the discipline makes its official Olympic debut.

As ambassadors of the art form’s birthplace, these American breakers face fierce international competition and a structured format that challenges the essence of breaking.

Preserving Hip-Hop’s Essence

For Team USA’s breakdancers, including Carmarry Hall, Victor Montalvo, and Jeffrey Mike Louis, the Olympics symbolize more than just a dance competition.

It’s about safeguarding the soul of breaking. Originally rooted in culture and Black dance, breaking has evolved over the years, and the Olympic stage presents a different structure that risks losing some of its heart.

International Challenge

While American breakers aim to preserve the essence of breaking, international competitors have been honing their skills and adapting to the structured Olympic format. Currently, the top-ranking breakers globally hail from Canada, Japan, and France, highlighting the challenge facing Team USA.

To secure a spot in the Paris Olympics, breakdancers must earn points in WDSF-sanctioned events. The next World Breaking Championship, hosted in Leuven, Belgium, will grant automatic spots to the top male and female breakers. Additional Olympic qualifying competitions are scheduled in China and Chile, with trials extending into mid-2024. Ultimately, 16 male and 16 female breakers will compete at Paris’ iconic Place de la Concorde.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

The introduction of the Trivium judging system, designed for the Olympics, brings objectivity to breakdance judging. It assesses breakers’ physical, artistic, and interpretative qualities in real-time, emphasizing creativity, technique, and musicality.

This shift from subjective judging reflects the sport’s evolution but raises questions about preserving its authenticity.

Embracing Evolution and Tradition

As the countdown to the Paris Olympics continues, Team USA’s breakdancers face both an international challenge and the need to strike a balance between preserving breaking’s cultural roots and adapting to the structured Olympic format.

Their journey serves as a testament to the ongoing evolution of hip-hop dance and its enduring global appeal.
