Real Madrid has officially lodged a complaint against referee Juan Martínez Munuera following the team’s 4-2 La Liga victory over Osasuna. The complaint accuses Martínez Munuera of “negligent drafting” of his match report, particularly for omitting the severe abuse targeted at Vinícius Jr. by fans. The Spanish club alleges that the referee “deliberately omitted the insults and humiliating shouts” despite multiple warnings from players during the incident. Shockingly, chants wishing death upon Vinícius were audible in the stadium, prompting Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal to gesture his ear to the referee, signaling the abuse.

Real Madrid has taken steps beyond filing a complaint with the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee in response to the distressing incident. The club has escalated the matter to the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance in Sports, urging for the identification and punishment of the fans involved in the abusive chants. Osasuna, on its part, has condemned the insults, which it claims contained no racist elements while emphasizing its commitment to eradicating such behavior from the sport.

Real Madrid’s pursuit of justice for Vinícius Jr. extends beyond this isolated event. The club has widened a complaint initially filed on February 15 regarding “racist and hateful insults” encountered by Vinícius at other stadiums, signaling a broader issue within Spanish football. Vinícius himself has highlighted the pervasive nature of racism in the sport, pointing to racist slurs chanted by Atlético Madrid fans outside their stadium.

La Liga’s efforts to address racism have been criticized, with the league stating its lack of authority to impose sanctions for racist abuse, leaving it to RFEF committees or regional prosecutors to pursue legal actions. The call for more stringent measures against racism has been echoed by figures such as FIFA president Gianni Infantino, advocating for automatic forfeits in cases of racism-related match abandonments.

Real Madrid’s actions signify a critical stand against racism and discrimination in football, challenging the sport’s governing bodies to enforce more effective measures. The club’s firm stance, supported by the broader football community, underscores the urgent need to confront and eradicate racism, ensuring the sport reflects unity and diversity. Vinícius Jr.’s experiences, unfortunately, highlight a darker aspect of football that requires immediate and unwavering attention.
