Actor Ezra Miller remains the lead in DC Comics’ highly-anticipated film, “The Flash.” Miller, who uses they/them pronouns, will reprise their role as the ultra-fast superhero in the new trailer released during the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Miller, 30, first played the Flash, also known as Barry Allen, in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017).
According to the film’s press release, “The Flash” follows Barry Allen as he uses his powers to travel back in time and save his mother. However, his attempt to change the past leads to unintended consequences, with General Zod returning to threaten destruction.
In the trailer, the Flash encounters his alternate-dimension counterpart and two versions of Batman, played by Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck. Keaton portrayed Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 film, while Affleck first took on the role in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) and later appeared in “Justice League” (2017).
Last year, there were questions about Miller’s involvement with DC and Warner Bros. after a series of arrests and erratic behaviour, including allegations of assault, grooming, and burglary. In August, Miller issued a public apology stating they were undergoing mental health treatment for complex issues. In January, Miller agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge of trespassing.
DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran stated that Miller is fully committed to their recovery and that the studio supports their journey. Safran said that Miller’s future with the studio would be discussed at the appropriate time, but they are focused on their recovery and progress.
