The ongoing conflict in Gaza City has intensified, resulting in heavy bombardment that has forced medical facilities to shut down and thousands of Palestinians to flee. The recent ground assault by Israel is aimed at combating Hamas militants who are regrouping in the city’s northern regions.
Destruction and Desperation
Large parts of Gaza City have been devastated after nine months of relentless fighting. Hakeem Abdel-Bar, a resident of the Tuffah district, described the situation as dire, with Israeli warplanes and drones “striking anything moving.” Tanks have also advanced into central districts, making the area extremely dangerous. “The fighting has been intense,” he said, emphasizing the severity of the conflict.
Medical Facilities Overwhelmed
The ongoing bombardment has severely impacted medical services. Nebal Farsakh, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent, reported that ambulances could not reach many affected districts due to the intense military operations. “It’s a dangerous zone,” she stated, highlighting the difficulties faced by first responders. The closure of Al-Ahli and Patients Friends Association hospitals has exacerbated the crisis, forcing the transfer of patients to the already overwhelmed Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The conflict has led to significant loss of life and displacement. According to the territory’s Health Ministry, the Israeli campaign has killed or wounded over 5% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced multiple times, with many now living in overcrowded tent camps. Maha Mahfouz, a mother of two, shared her experience of fleeing twice within 24 hours due to the escalating violence. “The buildings were destroyed. The roads were destroyed. All has become rubble,” she said.
Impact on Hospitals
Hospitals in Gaza have been frequently targeted, with Israeli troops occupying at least eight hospitals in the past nine months. This has led to the deaths of patients and medical workers and extensive damage to facilities. Israel has claimed that Hamas uses hospitals for military purposes but has provided limited evidence to support this assertion. Currently, only 13 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza are partially functioning, according to the U.N.’s humanitarian office.
Efforts for Ceasefire
Negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas are ongoing, with mediation efforts led by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar. Despite some progress, significant obstacles remain. Hamas has warned that the latest Israeli raids could jeopardize the negotiations. Meanwhile, CIA Director William Burns met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi to discuss the peace talks, with further discussions scheduled in Qatar.
