A rare and extraordinary typescript of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince is set to sell for an astonishing $1.25 million. This remarkable artifact, filled with handwritten corrections by the French author, is hailed as a “literary treasure” by book dealers. Published in 1943 during the turmoil of World War II, The Little Prince is one of the most translated books worldwide, only surpassed by religious texts.

A Glimpse into Saint-Exupéry’s Exile

The French-language typescript, bound in a worn black cover, was created in New York during Saint-Exupéry’s exile from Nazi-occupied France. It reflects his profound emotions and struggles before joining the Free French Air Force. This precious document is one of only three known copies, with the others residing in France’s national library and the Harry Ransom Center in Texas.

Among its treasures, the typescript includes the first written appearance of the beloved line: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; the essential is invisible to the eye.”

The Collector’s Dream

Sammy Jay, Senior Literature Specialist at Peter Harrington Rare Books, described the typescript as unparalleled in its insight into the author’s creative process. “This is quite simply the most exceptional example of that that I’ve ever seen or had the opportunity to be involved with,” said Jay, who has been in the rare book industry for 13 years.

Jay expressed the emotional impact of this find: “It’s a high point, and I feel almost a little poignant about it because I don’t quite see how I’m ever going to beat this.”

Original Sketches and Timeless Appeal

Adding to its allure, the typescript features two original pencil sketches by Saint-Exupéry, including an early draft of the iconic illustration of the little prince returning home. These sketches offer further insight into the story’s deeply personal nature, resonating with readers across generations.

Saint-Exupéry tragically disappeared in 1944 during a reconnaissance mission over the Mediterranean, making such artifacts even more significant.

A Rare Opportunity for Collectors

The typescript, having emerged from private hands, will be showcased at Abu Dhabi Art from November 20-24, offering collectors a rare opportunity to own a piece of literary history. Its price tag reflects not only its rarity but also the enduring magic of The Little Prince. This rare typescript captures the timeless wonder of The Little Prince and showcases Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s creative genius. As Sammy Jay remarked, this document offers unparalleled insight into one of the most beloved works of literature. For collectors and fans alike, it stands as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of the written word.
