Turkey’s Call for Dialogue
The Syrian civil war has reached another critical juncture as opposition forces achieve rapid advancements. Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, emphasized that these developments highlight the urgent need for Syrian President Bashar Assad to reconcile with his people and engage with the opposition. At a press conference in Ankara, Fidan stated, “Recent developments show once again that Damascus must reconcile with its people and the legitimate opposition.” He added that Turkey stands ready to contribute to the peace process.
Efforts for a Diplomatic Resolution
Turkey and Iran, despite backing opposing sides in the Syrian conflict, have agreed to collaborate with Russia to restore calm after insurgents launched a significant offensive. This push by opposition forces marks one of the most robust campaigns in years, shaking Assad’s position and intensifying regional tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who visited Assad before the Ankara meeting, reiterated Tehran’s unwavering support for the Syrian government. “We have decided to hold closer consultations and dialogue, and with God’s permission, we will cooperate to improve further the situation toward peace and stability in our region,” Araghchi affirmed.
Turkey’s Position on Security
Turkey has consistently stressed Syria’s territorial integrity while highlighting its security concerns. Fidan pointed out, “Turkey will never, ever allow terrorist organizations that seek to exploit the environment of instability. We will eliminate any threat to our national security and people wherever it emerges.” The country’s southern border faces threats from Kurdish militant groups, which Ankara considers terrorist organizations.
Humanitarian Concerns Amid Escalation
The rebel offensive has displaced thousands, with Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces withdrawing from regions like Tel Rifaat. Syrian Kurds have fled en masse, seeking safe passage to Aleppo and Kurdish-controlled areas. Simultaneously, airstrikes in Idlib have caused devastating losses. The White Helmets reported at least 15 civilian deaths, including hospital patients who perished due to power cuts following the strikes.
A Renewed Push for Peace
Turkey, Iran, and Russia plan to convene for further dialogue, underscoring the importance of diplomatic efforts in addressing Syria’s long-standing conflict. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia continues to assess the situation to maintain stability. The international community remains on edge as the crisis threatens to destabilize the broader region.
