A Legendary Story Gets a Musical Makeover

Vanessa Williams, renowned for her roles in television and film, is stepping into the spotlight of London’s West End with Elton John’s musical adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada. Making her West End debut, Williams portrays the iconic Miranda Priestly, a role immortalized by Meryl Streep in the 2006 movie. With Elton John’s legendary touch on the score, the musical has already become the talk of the town.

“I’ve been in the business for over 40 years. I’m soaking it all in … I’m very grateful that people have come to see me,” said Williams, who received a warm ovation from the audience during her first performance.

An Iconic Score by Elton John

The show’s heartbeat lies in its music, masterfully crafted by 77-year-old Elton John. Actor Matt Henry, who plays Nigel, Miranda’s confidant, credits the show’s success to the unforgettable score. “Elton’s music drives the show,” he shared.

John, famous for hits like Your Song and Broadway successes such as Billy Elliot and The Lion King, addressed the audience on opening night, sharing a personal struggle. He revealed, “I have lost my sight following an eye infection earlier this year,” adding a poignant note to the evening’s celebration.

High Fashion and Even Higher Heels

True to its roots in high fashion, the musical dazzles with extravagant costumes. Georgie Buckland, who plays Andy Sachs, and Vanessa Williams navigate 12 costume changes during the production, showcasing designs from icons like Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford, and Pamella Roland.

For Buckland, also making her West End debut, the physical demands of performing in high heels were an unexpected challenge. “I practiced walking on the carpet on an uneven surface. Because I am not a heels gal,” she admitted. Her highest pair? Six-and-a-half-inch Jimmy Choos.

Broadway Dreams and Audience Delight

Audiences have embraced the musical with enthusiasm. Williams noted that viewers are “eating it up,” a testament to the production’s charm and appeal. Jerry Mitchell, known for Hairspray and Kinky Boots, directed and choreographed the musical, which currently plays at London’s Dominion Theatre.

While Elton John hopes the show will one day make its way to Broadway, it’s shining brightly in the heart of London.

Fashion Meets Music in an Unforgettable Theatrical Experience

The Devil Wears Prada’s West End debut combines the glitz of high fashion, the brilliance of Elton John’s music, and the magnetic performances of Vanessa Williams and Georgie Buckland. With its sights set on Broadway, this musical is a must-see for theater lovers and fashion enthusiasts.
