The American Museum of Natural History introduced an exciting addition to its dinosaur collection—”Apex,” one of the most complete Stegosaurus fossils ever discovered. Standing 11 feet tall and 20 feet long, this magnificent skeleton captivated an audience of schoolchildren during its unveiling. With its iconic plates and spiky tail, Apex is set to become a favorite among dinosaur enthusiasts and visitors alike.

A Jurassic Giant Comes to Life

Stegosaurus, a plant-eating dinosaur known for its armored back and spiked tail, roamed North America about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic Period. “People are excited about this fossil because Stegosaurus is an iconic dinosaur,” said Roger Benson, the museum’s dinosaur curator. The fossil, found in Colorado, is among the most complete specimens of its kind ever unearthed, making it a significant addition to the museum’s renowned dinosaur exhibit.

Defense Mechanisms of the Stegosaurus

Though a herbivore, the Stegosaurus was no easy prey. “Although it was a herbivore, Stegosaurus wasn’t like a cow or a sheep,” Benson explained. “It’s a herbivore that could look after itself. It has these wicked spikes on its tail. It has plates along its back.” These features offered protection against predators like Allosaurus, a carnivorous dinosaur of the same period. Such adaptations underscore why Stegosaurus is considered one of the most fascinating creatures of its time.

A Priceless Fossil on Display

The Stegosaurus fossil, nicknamed Apex, was sold for $44.6 million at a Sotheby’s auction in July. The buyer, whose identity remains private, loaned the fossil to the museum, giving the public a rare opportunity to witness such a remarkable specimen. As one of the museum’s most impressive dinosaur displays, Apex is expected to draw crowds worldwide.

An Iconic Dinosaur That Captures Hearts

“Everyone has their favorite dinosaur, but Stegosaurus is up there in the top five,” Benson said. “So it’s hard not to get excited about a complete, large individual of this animal.” Apex showcases the incredible history of Earth’s prehistoric past and sparks wonder and curiosity in people of all ages.

The American Museum of Natural History invites everyone to experience the awe-inspiring presence of Apex, a testament to the grandeur of dinosaurs that once roamed our planet. Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to explore one of the most iconic creatures of the Jurassic Period.
