In the aftermath, one staff member has been terminated, and a legal proceeding against the individual has commenced. “The Museum deeply regrets this occurrence. We’ve undertaken measures to rectify the situation and ensure a more secure future,” announced Hartwig Fischer, the Museum’s director. In response to this incident, George Osborne, the chair of the British Museum, shared, “The Museum’s Trustees were deeply alarmed upon discovering the theft. Since then, we’ve taken swift measures including enhancing security, initiating an independent inquiry into the incident, and employing our disciplinary rights against the suspected individual.”
Osborne emphasized the institution’s primary objectives at the moment: recovering the pilfered items, understanding any potential oversights, and ensuring heightened security measures. “This incident casts a shadow on our beloved British Museum, but we’re committed to making amends and fortifying the institution,” he concluded.
