Chip giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has unveiled plans to bolster its presence in Japan with the construction of a second semiconductor fabrication plant. The move comes in response to escalating customer demand and is part of TSMC’s broader strategy to expand its global footprint.
The new facility will be spearheaded by TSMC’s subsidiary, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), with construction slated to commence by the end of 2024. Once operational, which is expected by the end of 2027, the plant will significantly augment TSMC’s manufacturing capabilities in Japan.
With an investment exceeding $20 billion, the project has garnered robust support from the Japanese government, along with investments from automotive giant Toyota Motor and technology titan Sony. Together, these stakeholders aim to fortify Japan’s semiconductor industry and foster economic growth through technological advancement.
The expansion in Japan aligns with TSMC’s broader vision to decentralize its manufacturing operations and mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. In addition to addressing surging demand, the new plant is expected to generate approximately 3,400 skilled jobs, providing a significant boost to Japan’s economy and employment landscape.
The announcement comes amid delays in TSMC’s Arizona project, initially slated for completion in 2026. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the facility is now anticipated to be operational by 2027 or 2028. Despite these setbacks, TSMC remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing semiconductor production capacity in the United States.
TSMC, headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, is renowned for its cutting-edge semiconductor technology and is responsible for manufacturing an estimated 90% of the world’s most advanced semiconductors. While TSMC has traditionally concentrated its most advanced manufacturing operations in Taiwan, the company has been actively expanding its global footprint in recent years. In addition to its forthcoming ventures in Japan and the United States, TSMC announced the establishment of its first European manufacturing facility in Dresden, Germany, in 2023.
