Is Barbie ready for the experience of… the real world?

The newly released trailer for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie provides the first comprehensive glimpse into Barbie (portrayed by Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) venturing out of Barbie Land to explore the “real world.” It’s safe to say it’s an exciting day for Barbie fans everywhere!

However, a wave of existential dilemmas soon engulfs Barbie.

“There’ve been some unusual occurrences,” Barbie confides to her friends, referring to incredible experiences such as a “cold shower” and a tumble from her roof rather than her usual leisurely float.

But there’s more.

“My heels… they’re touching the ground,” Barbie reveals to her Barbie companions, inducing shock and horror over her now flat feet. The result is chaotic and undeniably comical.

To address this conundrum, Barbie consults “Weird Barbie,” played by Kate McKinnon, who advises Barbie to embark on a journey to the “real world.”

“You have the option to return to your ordinary life, or you can learn the ultimate truth of the universe,” says Weird Barbie, offering Barbie the choice between her typical pink pumps or the more mundane Birkenstock sandals path.

And so commences Barbie’s adventurous voyage with Ken through the real world. “Barbie in the real world? That’s inconceivable,” remarks a human character named Gloria, played by America Ferrera.

As Cass Elliot’s “Make Your Kind of Music” echoes in the backdrop, we witness clips of Barbie’s unprecedented journey. The trailer reveals Barbie getting arrested, Ken performing surgery on a human, and Barbie attempting to evade the villainous Mattel CEO, portrayed by Will Farrell, who is keen to put her “back in a box.”

A recent announcement revealed that artists such as Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Haim, Tame Impala, and Nicki Minaj would feature on the movie’s soundtrack, along with one of the film’s stars, Ryan Gosling. His musical number, however, was absent from the trailer. DJ Mark Ronson serves as the Executive Music Producer for the movie’s soundtrack.

With its tongue-in-cheek humour, real-world explorations, and star-studded soundtrack, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” seems set to turn a classic childhood icon into a cinematic adventure. As audiences prepare for Barbie and Ken’s journey into reality, one thing is sure – this is one ‘play date’ to be noticed. The movie is scheduled for a summer release, hitting theatres on July 21.
