When the movie “Everything Everywhere All at Once” hit theatres in March 2022, co-director Daniel Kwan was unsure how audiences would react to its multiverse premise. However, the film turned out to be a huge success.

“We wanted to make a movie that everyone could relate to, but we thought we’d fail,” Kwan said, who worked with co-director Daniel Scheinert. “But we were pleasantly surprised when we found out that everyone could relate to at least one aspect of the film.”

The film has also received recognition from Hollywood, with 11 Oscar nominations for the March 12 Academy Awards, including best picture and best lead actress for Michelle Yeoh. Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu are nominated for best actress in a supporting role, while Ke Huy Quan is a favourite for best supporting actor.

The film follows the story of Evelyn Wang, played by Yeoh, a Chinese American immigrant who is struggling with her taxes, relationships, and life in general.

She soon discovers that she can travel between parallel universes as different versions of herself in order to save the multiverse and potentially heal her family relationships.

Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, who won a Golden Globe for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” admitted that there is always an element of uncertainty when it comes to the reception of a film.

“Once it’s completed and released to the public, there is no control over how it will be received,” Yeoh said. “It often comes down to luck and timing.”

According to Kwan, the film’s success was only possible with Yeoh’s performance. He said that she was able to bring the cast and crew together and maintain their focus on the project.

Stephanie Hsu, who played the complex character of Evelyn’s daughter Joy and the villain Jobu in the multiverse, described the role as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an absolute blast.

“I vividly recall filming the hallway scene where we were introduced to Jobu for the first time,” Hsu said. “I got to try out different costumes, do kung-fu, and even blow up a cop’s face into confetti.”

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” has proven to be a hit with audiences and critics alike, solidifying its place in the annals of cinema history.

From its innovative concept to its incredible performances, the film has captured the imagination of movie-goers and is poised to leave a lasting impact.
