The history of “Futurama” is deeply intertwined with its current status.
Matt Groening, renowned for his work in animation, brings back the beloved sci-fi series “Futurama” for its third comeback, now premiering on Hulu.
Initially launched on Fox in 1999, the series garnered significant attention thanks to the fame of Groening’s other successful show, “The Simpsons.”
“Futurama” narrates the peculiar tale of a pizza delivery boy who gets unintentionally cryogenically frozen in 1999, only to wake up a millennium later in a drastically altered world.
This world is populated with a diverse and eccentric ensemble featuring a boisterous, foul-tongued robot named Bender, among others.
Despite the adoration of its ardent fans, who appreciated its sharp wit and clever critique of science fiction clichés, Fox decided to axe the show in 2003.
However, the series found a second life 2009 on Comedy Central, initially broadcasting reruns. That same year, Groening had a conversation with CNN about the show’s possible end.
“We hope not. If it is, we feel we’re offering an emotionally satisfying conclusion to this grand sci-fi saga,” Groening shared back then. “But we did leave the door open just a bit in case we get renewed.”
Comedy Central eventually greenlit new episodes, only to cancel the series again in 2013.
Fast forward to a decade later, “Futurama” makes its return. Actor John DiMaggio, who gives life to the character of Bender, believes fans will be thrilled with the latest reboot.
“In my opinion, it’s as good as, if not better than, the original,” DiMaggio told EW.
This new run of “Futurama” promises to serve the same clever humour, richly-developed characters, and razor-sharp science fiction satire that the show’s fanbase has grown to love. With its creators’ undiminished passion and the returning talent of its original cast, the series seems poised to make a triumphant return to the small screen. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer to this far-out universe, buckle up for an exhilarating ride through the cosmos with the eccentric crew of “Futurama”.
