Recent revelations concerning the popular Netflix reality dating show, *Love Is Blind*, have brought forth serious allegations, with one contestant, Tran Dang, accusing the producers of negligence and another alleging “inhumane working conditions.” This news comes hot on the heels of the season five premiere, casting a shadow over the show’s reputation.
Tran Dang, a participant in the latest season, has filed a lawsuit claiming an alleged sexual assault by fellow participant Thomas Smith during a “Mexico vacation” segment of the series. With contestants under “24-hour surveillance”, Dang contends that the production crew likely filmed the traumatic incident, thereby making them privy to the act. Smith, alongside Love Is Blind production companies Kinetic Content and Delirium TV, are named in the lawsuit. Dang’s representation insists that when she reported the assault to the producers, they dismissed it as a mere lack of attraction on her part.
Kinetic Content and Delirium TV rebutted Dang’s claims in a joint defence. The two production companies emphasized their dedication to supporting victims of sexual assault but categorically denied any wrongdoing, highlighting the show’s unscripted nature. Contrary to Dang’s narrative, the statement read that Dang “never informed the producers of any alleged wrongdoing.” Chris Coelen, the show creator, reiterated this sentiment, mentioning that Dang never communicated any feelings of unsafety or allegations during the show’s production.
Ben Allen, Dang’s attorney, expressed frustration with the producers’ legal tactics, accusing them of prolonging the trial through various legal maneuvers. He remains confident about vindicating Dang’s position in court.
Another contentious issue related to the show surfaced from a prior season. Season two contestant Jeremy Hartwell had also filed a lawsuit accusing the show’s producers of underpayment and inhumane conditions. He alleged they intentionally manipulated the emotional and psychological state of the contestants to boost the show’s drama.
While Dang and Smith have yet to appear in any aired episodes, Coelen hinted that several stories, including engagements, might not make the final cut. This selective narrative choice underscores the complexity and challenges of producing reality television.
