As anticipation builds over the possibility of a third Mamma Mia film, Meryl Streep has recently shared her thoughts on reprising her role in a future sequel.
Will there be another round of Mamma Mia’s musical magic?
With fans eagerly awaiting news on a third Mamma Mia installment, Meryl Streep has voiced her willingness to participate in another film. Speaking to Vogue for a recent oral history of the hit musical, she said, “I’m up for anything. While I’d need a knee scoping before we shoot, count me in if there’s an exciting idea on the table.”
Based on the ABBA-centric stage show, the 2008 movie Mamma Mia stars Streep as Donna, a single mom operating a hotel on a Greek island. The plot thickens when her daughter Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) invites three of Donna’s past loves (played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård) to her wedding, hoping to uncover her real father.
The sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), focuses on Sophie as she plans to reopen the hotel after her mother’s passing, while also revealing the story of a young Donna (portrayed by Lily James) and her early romantic escapades.
Considering Donna’s character is deceased, Streep remains unsure how she’d be integrated into the storyline of a third movie. However, she’s not ruling out creative possibilities. “If Judy [Craymer] can figure out a way to bring Donna back, I’m all in,” she mentioned. “It could be like a soap opera twist—maybe it was her twin sister who died.”
As time ticks on, Streep whimsically notes, “We might have to call it Grand-Mamma Mia by the time we get around to making it!”
Her co-stars are similarly enthusiastic about a potential third film. Colin Firth stated, “I’d jump at the opportunity for all the joy the first two movies brought. We need a compelling reason to reunite, not necessarily grandiose, just a solid script.”
Stellan Skarsgård humorously added, “I might be ashes in an urn by the time Mamma Mia 3 happens, but I’d still love to be involved.”
While ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus cautioned about the scarcity of songs for another sequel, “Never say never,” he added.
Director Ol Parker has kept the hope alive, noting, “Producer Judy Craymer has always envisioned it as a trilogy. We’ve had great success so far, and there’s an appetite for a third. Wouldn’t it be delightful?”
Pierce Brosnan shares that sentiment, telling E! News, “I’d love for Meryl to return anytime. The joy we’ve experienced making these films is something special. A third installment could certainly bring new stories—perhaps even as grandfathers!”
While the fate of a third Mamma Mia movie remains in the air, the enthusiasm from the original cast is palpable. From knee scopings to possible soap opera twists, it seems everyone is willing to take a chance on another film, so long as the story warrants it. Whether or not we get to call out an S.O.S. for Grand Mamma Mia, the buzz and speculation keep fans hopeful that the musical journey is far from over.
