A final hello to “You”!
Netflix confirmed on Friday that the popular thriller series “You,” featuring Penn Badgley as serial killer Joe Goldberg, will return for a fifth and final season. Season 5 will see a change in showrunners, with executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo taking over from Sera Gamble, who developed and managed the show for its first four seasons alongside Greg Berlanti.
Gamble expressed her gratitude in a statement, thanking her collaborators and highlighting her excitement for the upcoming season. She praised the cast and crew and expressed pride in their achievements and confidence in the new leadership.
“You” has had an exciting journey, premiering on Lifetime in 2018 before being cancelled, only to be revived by Netflix later that year. The show has since enjoyed global success on the streaming platform.
Alongside the renewal announcement, Netflix hinted at Joe’s fate, posing, “Will Joe Goldberg finally get his judgment day?”
Season 4 concluded with Joe returning to New York City, accompanied by his new love interest, Kate (Charlotte Ritchie). With his past misdeeds seemingly erased, Badgley discussed his character’s potential fate in a Variety interview, questioning whether merely killing Joe would be sufficient punishment.
Series creators Berlanti and executive producer Sarah Schechter shared their gratitude towards Netflix, Gamble, and the entire team, confirming their long-term plan for a five-season arc. They expressed enthusiasm for Foley and Lo’s leadership in the show’s final season.
Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, acknowledged the show’s cultural impact and expressed excitement for the “unforgettable ending” awaiting fans.
Foley and Lo expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to work on “You” and the honour of being entrusted with Joe Goldberg’s concluding chapter.
According to Netflix, details about the start of production for Season 5 will be revealed later. However, the show will likely return to Joe’s New York City roots.
In a January interview with Variety, Gamble shared her enthusiasm for a potential return to the city, stating, “We would love to do the return to New York.” As anticipation builds for the final season, fans are eager to see how Joe Goldberg’s twisted journey will end.
The upcoming fifth and final season of “You” promises an unforgettable ending to Joe Goldberg’s dark and twisted journey. With new showrunners taking the helm and a potential return to New York City, fans eagerly await the resolution of this thrilling saga. As the series approaches its gripping conclusion, one question remains: will Joe Goldberg finally face justice for his crimes?
