A Classic Returns to the Screen
Variety has learned that a new live-action Scooby-Doo series could soon be coming to Netflix. This exciting one-hour drama project is nearing a deal with the streaming giant with a script-to-series commitment. While exact plot details are being kept under wraps, it is confirmed that the series will be based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
Star-Studded Production Team
The new project will feature a talented team of writers and producers. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg are set to write and executive produce along with André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner under their Midnight Radio banner. Additionally, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will executive produce through Berlanti Productions, a company currently under an overall deal with WBTV. Jonathan Gabay of Berlanti Productions and Adrienne Erickson will co-executive produce.
According to sources, the team is committed to bringing a fresh and exciting version of Scooby-Doo to life. “This project has generated a lot of excitement, and we are eager to see how it develops,” commented an insider.
Live-Action Scooby-Doo History
Should this project move forward, it would not be the first time Scooby-Doo has come to life in a live-action format. The 2002 movie “Scooby-Doo,” starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini, was a box office success, grossing over $250 million worldwide. Its sequel, “Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed,” released in 2004, also performed well, grossing over $180 million. Additionally, the live-action TV film “Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins” and its sequel were released in 2009 and 2010, respectively.
The Animated Legacy of Scooby-Doo
Since its debut in the late 1960s, Scooby-Doo has been a staple in pop culture with multiple animated series and movies. Most recently, the animated film “Scoob! Holiday Haunt” was set to be released on Max but was scrapped due to cost-cutting measures. Currently, Max airs the animated series “Velma,” with Mindy Kaling voicing the bespectacled member of the Mystery Inc. gang.
