The ensemble promises an emotional roller coaster as classic characters, spanning ten decades and featuring in over 85 Disney movies, gather for an unprecedented group photo to commemorate Disney’s 100th anniversary. Some newly released stills glimpse the film, revealing Moana crossing paths with The Little Mermaid’s Flounder, while the timeless Mickey Mouse, Minnie, and the Peter Pan crew find themselves in Disney’s real-world Burbank HQ.
But it’s not just about the characters; the voices behind them are just as significant. With a star-studded cast including Idina Menzel (Elsa), Jodi Benson (Ariel), Jeremy Irons (Scar), and Dwayne Johnson (Maui), amongst others, the film also honours past legends by incorporating archival recordings of Robin Williams (Genie), Verna Felton (Flora), and many more.
Jennifer Lee, the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, expressed her profound connection to the project, saying, “I could not stop crying [when it was pitched]. I came back and said, we have to find a way to make this.” The enthusiasm and commitment the entire studio demonstrated towards this film are palpable, emphasizing its significance in the Disney legacy.
“Once Upon a Studio,” directed by Dan Abraham and Trent Correy and produced by Yvett Merino and Bradford Simonsen, is all set to premiere on ABC on October 15, aligned with “The Wonderful World of Disney: Disney’s 100th Anniversary Celebration.” For those in the UK, Disney+ will stream the film a day later, on October 16. The short will also accompany Disney Animation’s upcoming “Wish,” released on November 22.
