A Multiverse-Melting Surprise at Comic-Con
Marvel Studios delivered a stunning revelation during their panel at San Diego Comic-Con: Robert Downey Jr., one of the MCU’s most iconic stars, is set to make a grand return to the franchise. Downey, known for his role as Iron Man, will reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the classic Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom in the upcoming films Avengers: Doomsday (May 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 2027).
The Grand Announcement
The announcement was made spectacularly, with Downey appearing on stage alongside Marvel’s head, Kevin Feige, and directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Emerging from a group of men in Doctor Doom masks, Downey exclaimed to the audience, “New mask, same task.”
Joe Russo expressed his excitement, saying, “If we’re going to bring Victor Von Doom to the screen — he is one of the more complex characters in all of comics… this is potentially one of the more entertaining characters in all of fiction.”
The Russo Brothers Return
The Russo Brothers, who directed several successful Marvel films, including Avengers: Endgame, are set to helm the following two Avengers films. Anthony Russo reflected on their journey: “That four-movie run was incredible, and it left us spent, with all of our emotions on the floor.” Joe Russo added, “It’s the biggest story that Marvel Comics ever told… It’s the reason why Ant and I are standing up here.”
A Creative Overhaul
The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday marks a significant shift for Marvel. Initially, the next Avengers installment was titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, starring Jonathan Majors as Kang. However, following Majors’ legal issues, Marvel overhauled the project. The new film, Avengers: Doomsday, will serve as Avengers 5, leading into Avengers: Secret Wars, based on the iconic 1980s Marvel comics.
Writing and Production Team
Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote previous Marvel films with Christopher Markus, will write the new Avengers movies. The Russo Brothers have always dreamed of working on Secret Wars, a storyline where Marvel’s heroes and villains are transported to Battle World by an all-powerful being known as The Beyonder.

This announcement comes on the heels of Deadpool and Wolverine’s record-breaking opening weekend, which injects a renewed sense of energy into the MCU.
