In recent years, Disney has been capitalizing on the live-action adaptations of their animated classics. While some have been box office successes like “Alice in Wonderland” and “Maleficent,” others like “Cinderella” and “The Jungle Book” have had mixed results. With the massive success of “Beauty and the Beast,” Disney found that audiences wanted the familiar, and so they continued with “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” in 2019, among others.
One upcoming adaptation is the live-action remake of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” which we will discuss in more detail below. We will cover the release date, synopsis, casting, director, and any available images or trailers.
Release Date
According to some North American media outlets, the release date for “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” remake is July 19, 2024. Whether the film will premiere on Disney+ or in theatres remains to be seen.
Synopsis
The story of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is already well-known, thanks to Victor Hugo’s classic novel “Our Lady of Paris,” published in 1831. The original story is darker than Disney’s animated adaptation, with a more tragic ending for the main characters. It is still being determined if the live-action remake will follow the animated film, the original novel, or the musical adaptation, a blend of the two.
David Henry Hwang, a Tony Award-winning playwright, is writing the script, and Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, who worked on the animated film’s soundtrack, are also involved in the project.
Cast
The original animated film featured the voices of Tom Hulce as Quasimodo, Demi Moore as Esmeralda, and Kevin Kline as Captain Phoebus. It is unknown if they will reprise their roles in the remake. Josh Gad, who portrayed Lefou in “Beauty and the Beast” and starred in the Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon,” is rumoured to play Quasimodo, as he is also a producer on the film. Casting for the live-action version is yet to be announced.
Director
The director of the live-action “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” has not been announced. The original animated film was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, who were part of the so-called “Disney Renaissance.”
Images and Trailer
