A flight attendant shared several travel tips, including safely placing a shoe in the hotel room upon arrival.
Esther Sturrus, a KLM Dutch airline employee, often posts TikTok videos about her flight attendant experiences and offers advice for fellow travellers. In a December video, Sturrus provided a few hotel hacks.
In the video, she shared a tip for those concerned about leaving items behind in hotel rooms.
“Concerned about forgetting something in the safe?” she captioned the clip. “Put your heel/shoe-in, and you won’t forget!”
Sturrus demonstrated this by locking a blue heel in the hotel safe.
Many TikTok users praised Sturrus’s shoe idea in the video’s comments, which has over 1.2 million views.
“Hotel shoe hack, amazing idea,” one wrote, while another added, “Shoe reminder is perfect.”
Others jokingly noted potential issues with leaving shoes in safes, with one commenting, “If I start getting single shoes from 3000 room safes for lost and found, it’s going to annoy me the most, lol.”
Sturrus shared additional tips, such as using hotel hanger clips to fully close curtains and plugging a USB cable into a TV to charge a phone.
She also suggested two uses for shower caps in hotel rooms: covering shoes before packing them in a suitcase and covering “dirty” TV remotes.
Lastly, Sturrus mentioned that any card, not just room keys, can keep the room powered.
Users appreciated these tips, with one commenting, “The hanger! Thank you, I hate light in the room at 6 am, and as a man, I don’t have the accessories women have.”
“Wow! These are cool ideas… Thanks for sharing!” another added.
Sturrus is one of many flight attendants to share travel tips. In a March 2022 interview with Express, flight attendant Miguel Muñoz offered some “life-changing” packing advice.
“It’s always better to have less than more on any trip,” he said. “For example, if you realize you’ll need an extra T-shirt on the last day of your trip, you can always wash one at the hotel.”
Muñoz also explained how travellers could create more space in their suitcases, saying, “I think garment bags are the best way to pack clothes. It may seem silly, but more clothes fit in the suitcase with them than without. It’s even better than vacuum-packing your clothes.”
In addition to Sturrus and Muñoz, other flight attendants have shared their insights and advice on making travel more enjoyable and efficient.
One standard tip is to stay hydrated while flying. Due to the low humidity in airplane cabins, it’s crucial to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration, which can cause fatigue, dry skin, and other health issues.
Another tip is to always pack a change of clothes in your carry-on luggage. If your checked baggage gets lost or delayed, having a fresh set of clothes will help you feel more comfortable and prepared.
Flight attendants also recommend bringing a portable charger for electronic devices. This ensures you can charge your phone, tablet, or other gadgets throughout the journey, especially during long layovers or unexpected delays.
Ask the front desk about upgrades or promotions to maximize your hotel stay. Sometimes, hotels may offer free room upgrades, late check-out, or other perks if they have availability.
Moreover, flight attendants suggest taking advantage of loyalty programs for airlines and hotels. Joining these programs can earn you points, which can later be redeemed for free flights, hotel stays, or other travel-related rewards.
Lastly, flight attendants emphasize the importance of staying organized while travelling. Using packing cubes or other packing organizers can help keep your suitcase neat and make it easier to find items when needed.
Flight attendants have a wealth of knowledge and experience in travel, and their tips can help make your journey more enjoyable, efficient, and hassle-free. By staying hydrated, packing smartly, charging your devices, taking advantage of loyalty programs, and staying organized, you can ensure a smoother and more pleasant travel experience.
