Switzerland’s GoldenPass Express (GPX) has redefined luxury train travel, offering an unparalleled scenic journey through the Swiss Alps. Launched in December 2022 and fully operational by June 2023, the GPX traces a historic medieval trade route, stretching 115 kilometers from Interlaken to Montreux. With its state-of-the-art engineering and breathtaking views, this high-tech train has quickly become one of Europe’s most sought-after travel experiences.

A Journey Through History and Innovation

The GPX offers more than just picturesque landscapes. It is a symbol of engineering excellence, eliminating the need for train transfers due to different track gauges. This has been made possible by the revolutionary “variable gauge bogie” technology, developed over 15 years at the cost of 89 million Swiss francs. This innovation allows the train to seamlessly switch between different track gauges and electrical voltages, providing a smooth and uninterrupted journey through the heart of Switzerland.

Built by the Montreux-Oberland-Bernois Railway (MOB) in collaboration with BLS AG, the GPX follows a route that has been part of Swiss railway dreams since the late 1800s. The initial idea was to connect the Francophone region of Montreux with the German-speaking area of Interlaken without the inconvenience of changing trains. The GPX makes this possible, offering a direct, three-hour and fifteen-minute journey that highlights the scenic beauty of the region, from the towering Bernese Alps to the serene vineyards of Montreux.

Luxury Onboard Experience

Passengers aboard the GPX are treated to a level of luxury that rivals the world’s finest travel experiences. The train’s Prestige Class features nine heated, swiveling seats designed by the renowned Ferrari-designer firm, Pininfarina. These seats offer various comfort settings, including lumbar support, foot elevation, and a seat warmer. With floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, passengers can enjoy uninterrupted views of the Swiss landscape, from snow-capped peaks to wildflower-filled meadows.

Despite its modern amenities, the train retains a classic charm with its midnight-blue exterior, reminiscent of the iconic Orient Express. The interior combines crisp, cutting-edge design with an atmosphere of elegance and comfort. While there is no full-service dining onboard, local snack options, such as cheeses, are available, allowing passengers to sample Swiss delicacies during their journey.

Scenic Route and Destinations

The GoldenPass Express offers travelers a visual feast, showcasing some of Switzerland’s most stunning natural beauty. The train passes through exclusive towns like Gstaad, known for its luxury and appeal to A-list celebrities, and Château d’Oex, famous for its annual hot air balloon festival. The journey culminates in Montreux, where travelers can enjoy the mild climate and palm-lined shores of Lake Geneva.

The route not only connects diverse landscapes but also brings together different cultural regions of Switzerland. The GPX offers a unique opportunity to experience the linguistic and cultural diversity of the country, making it more than just a mode of transportation but a cultural bridge.

A New Standard in Train Travel

The GPX is part of the Swiss Travel System’s premium panoramic train offerings, with individual tickets ranging from 56 to 145 Swiss francs. It is also included in the Swiss Travel Pass, which provides unlimited access to public transportation, 50% off mountain railways and gondolas, and free admission to more than 500 museums. The Swiss Travel Pass starts at 244 Swiss francs, with free travel for children under 16.

The GoldenPass Express sets a new benchmark in luxury rail travel, combining technological innovation with stunning natural beauty. It offers travelers a seamless and unforgettable journey through the heart of Switzerland, providing an experience that is both luxurious and deeply connected to the country’s rich history and spectacular landscapes.
