In an inspiring blend of sustainability and creativity, Mexican fashion designer Camilo Morales has turned the aftermath of election seasons into fashionable, eco-friendly tote bags. By recycling vinyl political advertisements from Mexico’s local, state, and federal elections, Morales showcases his commitment to the environment and innovative fashion.

From Political Ads to Fashion Statements

Camilo Morales, known for upcycling various materials into bags, clothing, and accessories, has recently focused on the vinyl advertisements used during Mexico’s elections. “This election season was ridiculous,” Morales commented, highlighting the sheer volume of ads. Morales’ creativity shines as he transforms these ubiquitous banners into unique tote bags sold under his label, Rere.

A Sustainable Fashion Revolution

Morales has diligently collected these political ads for over a year, repurposing them into fashionable items. His totes vary in design and complexity, ranging from 100 pesos ($5.44) to 600 pesos ($32.63). The most straightforward designs use the white backgrounds of the ads. At the same time, the most intricate pieces feature collages, such as the heavily shadowed eyes of Clara Brugada, the incoming mayor of Mexico City.

The Environmental Impact of Political Campaigns

The environmental toll of election seasons is significant. Juan Manuel Nunez, a professor at the Iberoamerican University, estimated that Mexico City alone produced around 10,000 tons of trash from political publicity. Despite logos indicating recyclability, many banners are made from PVC, which decomposes for centuries. “Although promoted as environmentally friendly, these banners and tarps are usually made from PVC, which can take hundreds of years to break down,” Nunez noted.

Innovative Uses of Election Waste

Morales isn’t alone in finding creative ways to repurpose political ads. A TikTok user went viral for turning these banners into dog beds, while migrants have crafted them into tents. These initiatives highlight a growing trend towards sustainability and innovation in reusing election materials.

Camilo Morales’ initiative addresses the waste generated by political campaigns and sets a precedent for sustainable fashion. By transforming election ads into stylish tote bags, Morales proves that with creativity, even the most unlikely materials can become fashionable and environmentally friendly.
