“St. Peter’s is like a starry sky on a summer night: you remain enchanted by its splendor,” said Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, St. Peter’s archpriest. The new tools, he added, act “like a telescope or spaceship,” making the basilica’s wonders even more accessible.
Revolutionizing Accessibility with AI
The Vatican partnered with Microsoft and Iconem, a digital heritage company, to create an interactive website, a digital replica of the basilica, and two AI-enabled exhibitions. Visitors worldwide can immerse themselves in St. Peter’s grandeur without stepping into Rome.
A staggering 40,000–50,000 people visit the basilica daily, and these innovations aim to serve both in-person tourists and global audiences. “We are taking St. Peter’s not just to the world but to a new generation of people, in a language that is more accessible for the times we live in,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith.
The Making of a Digital Masterpiece
Creating a 3D model of St. Peter’s Basilica required cutting-edge technology. Over four weeks, drones flew at night, capturing over 400,000 images with cameras and lasers. The data collected equaled a six-kilometer-high stack of DVDs. AI algorithms pieced this data together to build an intricate digital twin of the basilica.
Beyond providing a virtual experience, this digital twin will assist in preservation and restoration efforts, ensuring the basilica’s treasures endure for generations.

While Pope Francis has recognized the value of AI in expanding access to knowledge, he has also emphasized the need for ethical implementation.
