Biden Classified Documents: House GOP Demands Visitor Logs

Biden-Classified-Documents-House-GOP-Demands-Visitor-Logs

As the nation watches the Biden administration settle into the White House, newly empowered House Republicans are demanding answers about recent discoveries of classified documents at President Joe Biden’s home and former office. On Sunday, the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, led by Chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., demanded that the White House turn over all information related to its searches of the President’s properties.

“We have a lot of questions,” said Comer in a statement. “The mishandling of classified materials raises the issue of whether the President has jeopardized our national security.”

Comer’s Demands

According to a letter he sent to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, Comer outlined his demands for the investigation. He wants to obtain all documents and communications related to the searches by Biden’s team, as well as visitor logs of the President’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, from January 2021 to the present. The aim, according to Comer, is to determine who may have had access to classified records and how they got there.

Comer also criticized the searches by Biden representatives when the Justice Department began investigating. He asked for all relevant information, including visitor logs, by the end of the month.

“My concern is that the special counsel was called for, but yet hours after that we still had the President’s personal attorneys, who have no security clearance, still rummaging around the President’s residence, looking for things. I mean that would essentially be a crime scene, so to speak,” Comer said in an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

White House Response

The White House has yet to comment on the House GOP’s demands for visitor logs and other information related to the searches. On Saturday, the White House announced that it had discovered five additional classified documents at President Biden’s home on Thursday, the same day a special counsel was appointed.

Visitor Logs and Presidential Privacy

It’s worth noting that President Trump’s administration had also not released visitor logs, citing “grave national security risks and privacy concerns of the hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.” In 2013, a federal appeals court ruled that visitor logs can be withheld under presidential executive privilege. This ruling was written by Judge Merrick Garland, now serving as President Biden’s attorney general.

White House spokesman Ian Sams stated that “Like every President in decades of modern history, his personal residence is personal,” but that after the previous administration ended keeping visitors logs, President Biden restored them upon taking office, including publishing them regularly.

The Secret Service and Visitor Logs

According to agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, the U.S. Secret Service protects the President’s residence, but it does not maintain visitor logs. “We don’t independently maintain our own visitor logs because it’s a private residence,” Guglielmi said. According to him, the agency screens visitors to the President’s properties, but does not keep records of those screenings.

Additionally, the White House confirmed that President Biden does not independently keep track of visitors to his residence since becoming president.

The Investigation Continues

The investigation into handling classified documents at President Biden’s residence is ongoing, and new developments may arise. The House GOP’s demands may or may not be fulfilled by the White House, and it remains to be seen how the investigation will proceed. The investigation could potentially uncover information that could compromise national security or reveal that the documents were mishandled due to innocent mistakes.

One thing is for sure; the investigation will likely be a political minefield for the Biden administration. Republicans will no doubt use the investigation as a way to question the President’s fitness for office. At the same time, Democrats will likely defend the President and accuse the Republicans of using the investigation as a political weapon.

Ultimately, it’s important to remember that the investigation is not about politics but rather about ensuring the safe handling of classified information and protecting the nation’s security. The American people deserve to know the truth about what happened with the classified documents found at President Biden’s residence and whether or not any laws or protocols were broken.

It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time a President’s handling of classified information has been called into question. The investigation into the handling of classified information at President Biden’s residence is just the latest example of how important it is for Presidents to be held accountable for their actions and for the nation’s security to be protected.

The House GOP’s demands for visitor logs and other information related to the searches of President Biden’s residence are necessary to investigate the mishandling of classified documents. The investigation should be conducted objectively and without political bias. The American people deserve transparency and the truth about what happened with the classified documents, and the investigation must be done to ensure that the nation’s security is protected.
