The iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit will continue to be a part of the Formula 1 calendar, ensuring a thrilling Belgian Grand Prix until at least 2025. This extension comes after a one-year agreement was reached between Formula 1 and the race organizers, cementing Spa’s status as a historic and beloved venue in the world of motorsport.

Spa-Francorchamps has a rich history in Formula 1, having been one of the seven circuits featured in the inaugural world championship in 1950. Nestled in the picturesque Ardennes forest, this 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) circuit has been the backdrop for 56 Grand Prix events, captivating fans and drivers alike.

Safety has been a topic of concern at the circuit in recent times. Tragic incidents, including the passing of Dutch teenager Dilano Van ‘t Hoff in a rain-hit Formula Regional European Championship race in July, have raised questions about the track’s safety record. Additionally, the circuit was the site of the fatal multi-car crash that claimed the life of French driver Anthoine Hubert during a Formula Two race at the Belgium GP in 2019.

Despite these challenges, this year’s Belgian Grand Prix saw a notable increase in attendance, with 380,000 fans flocking to the circuit, marking a 20,000-person rise compared to the 2022 edition of the event. Furthermore, the race remains a favorite among drivers, with reigning world champion Max Verstappen proclaiming it as his preferred track in Formula 1. Notably, Verstappen triumphed at the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix.

Acknowledging the importance of Spa in the Formula 1 calendar, Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his delight in extending the partnership until 2025. He also commended the efforts of the race promoter and the Government of Wallonia in enhancing the fan experience and circuit infrastructure while emphasizing the ongoing commitment to delivering safe and exciting racing.

The economic significance of the Belgian Grand Prix to the Wallonia region cannot be understated. A study conducted in 2021 revealed that the Grand Prix generates positive spin-offs of €41.8 million ($44 million) for the region, even after deducting public funding, which has been decreasing steadily. This financial impact underscores the positive outlook surrounding the event, promising even more favorable results in the future.

With the extension of the Belgian Grand Prix until 2025, motorsport enthusiasts can look forward to more thrilling moments at the historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit while the organizers continue their efforts to enhance safety and fan experiences, ensuring that the legacy of this iconic race endures.
