Apple is expanding its integration of USB-C charging across its range of devices, with the latest addition being the third-generation Apple Pencil, designed for use with iPads.

This significant change comes as Apple continues to adapt its product lineup to align with the European Union’s push for a universal charging solution.

A New Generation of Apple Pencil

The newly announced Apple Pencil supports USB-C charging and is compatible with iPads. The third-generation model retains its primary functions, including note-taking, sketching, and document marking.

It also supports a hover feature, enabling users to preview and switch between tools and app controls when used with compatible iPad Pro models. The price of the new Apple Pencil has been set at $79, making it more accessible compared to previous models.

A Shift Towards Universal Charging

The introduction of USB-C charging for the Apple Pencil follows Apple’s recent retirement of the Lightning charger.

This move is in response to the European Union’s legislation, which mandates USB-C charging for a range of small devices, including smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, and portable speakers, by 2024. This law aims to simplify the charging ecosystem by reducing the number of required chargers and cables and allowing interoperability between different manufacturers’ devices.

Apple’s Product Lineup Adapts to Change

In addition to the Apple Pencil, Apple has also announced that its next-generation smartphones and new AirPods Pro will feature USB-C charging. This change comes after Apple had already transitioned its iPads and MacBooks to USB-C. While this shift is in line with the EU’s requirements, it also marks a significant departure for Apple, as it gives up control of its wired charging ecosystem. Consumers will need to discern between good and bad quality chargers, which might not be immediately apparent.

Charging into the Future

Apple’s gradual adoption of USB-C charging across its product range is a noteworthy shift in the company’s strategy. The third-generation Apple Pencil is just the latest example of Apple’s commitment to evolving its products to meet new standards and regulations.

With an estimated 42 million Apple Pencils sold since its launch in 2015, and with the new USB-C charging feature, Apple is poised to continue its success in this product category.
